Yesterday was my last day of placement. I enjoyed my time there but the time seemed to have flew by. I was able to connect with the students and they enjoyed my lessons *phew* Grade 1's are not hard to impress but they have very short attention spans. lol Something I enjoyed most was asking them questions during my lessons. I love oral discussions because students learn from another by listening to each other, and I get to direct them to think more by extending the questions. Something I least enjoyed was chatty students-- they never get any work done. lol I tell them to get started, after circling the classrooms and helping others, they still have not picked up their pencils. lol I think the parts of the school day where i get to care for them and have our little chitchats is recess time when I zip up their winter coats and closely working with some one on one. Something that I really needed to stress was for them to put up their hand before they speak during instruction time on the carpet. They are such eager beavers, all of them want to give their 2 cents.
Since it was my last day, I received cards with many "i love you's" and pictures of me and them. My associate was really nice also, she gave me Godiva chocolates and a giftcard to Winners. When I did OFIP with the students, we studied the book called "Lillie's Purple Plastic Purse" By: Kevin Henkes and she got me the hard cover book to remind me that the students and I studied it together.
By far, this was the best placement I've had in a classroom setting.

Hey Maggie,
I too miss my little grade 3’s… did I tell you, they even got me to cry on the last day! I’m such a sap!!! I’ve notice ever since I’ve gotten into teachers college I’ve become more emotional then ever… you know what that means, time to graduate! LOL. Anyhow, I notice you wrote about some of your pet peeves, and I too have established a pet peeve. I cannot stand when a student puts up their hand, walks up to you, and continuously scream out your name until you acknowledge them. The whole hand raising thing is meaningless. However, it becomes less of a pet peeve when they make me laugh!
Hi Maggie!
I am really happy you enjoyed your first placement! I don't think I have talked to anyone who hasn't yet, lol. I miss my Grade 3's...it was such an exciting experience. I noticed Sharifa's comment..and I found some little pet peeves too! I think the students are so eager to get your attention that they will do anything to get you to acknowledge them. Sometimes my students would be so excited to answer a question that somehow they would all start kneeling on the carpet, shaking their arms and making "eeeee" noises for me to pick them,lol...even though this isn't always acceptable, it did make me smile:) One other pet peeve of mine is when the students would come up to me every other second to ask me a question...that didn't last long though. We found some new strategies of asking their peers or remaining in their seats with their hands up if they still had a question. Our next placement will be here soon and we will have a new group of exciting students! Good luck with the rest of your assignments:)
Wow Maggie, it sounds as though you really enjoyed your placement! Isn't grade one just the best year ever!?!? I thouroughly enjoyed my time with the six year olds haha.
My ears kind of perked up when you mentioned "zipping up" the children's coats. I say this because it sounds as though your associate might have had quite a different view of the children then mine. By no means were we to do anything for the children ... apparently we underestimate what they are capable of and that includes zipping jackets, opening containers, or telling them what to do with finished work. Now, I'm not sure how your associate felt about all those things, or even who has the better philosophy, but what I do realize is that there is definitely more than one way to teach.
Good Luck today with your school placement for block II!!
